Last week, ACES students learned something interesting about balloons, then tried their hand at some experiments using balloons and skewers as well as ziploc bags and super sharp pencils.
Balloons are primarily made from polymers, specifically latex (natural rubber) and other synthetic polymers like polyethylene. These polymers are long chains of molecules that allow the balloon to stretch and deform without breaking. Because of the flexibility of these polymers, students were able to pierce through the balloons without popping them and through the bags of water without spilling a drop.
